Effie Brewer

Submitted by Beatryce Nivens

Effie Brewer who was the twin of Isaiah and the sixth child of Robert and Emiline, married William Nivens. Of this union, there were seven children. Settling in Monroe, North Carolina, the Nivens' family began to prosper. William became an inventor and owner of land. See his "Nivens' Cotton Chopper" (see pictures of patent) which was patented in 1925.

While her husband toiled to bring home the bacon, Effie was a housewife who raised the children to be loving, ambitious and kind. Despite her financial comfort and standing in the community, she was also a great fighter for racial justice. There are many stories of her doing battle to achieve equality for Blacks in Monroe, North Carolina. Where there was injustice, she knew that it had to be challenged. She was not a pushover.
